Periodontal Regeneration

Periodontal regeneration is treatment that regrows gum tissue and jawbone (alveolar bone) destroyed by periodontitis, stabilizing loose teeth and preserving natural teeth as long as possible.

Even teeth that could lead to extraction if left untreated can have a higher chance of preservation with timely periodontal regeneration treatment.

Gum Regeneration

What is gum regeneration?

Gum regeneration is treatment that regenerates alveolar bone and periodontal tissue lost to periodontal disease using bone graft material and a barrier membrane. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) prevents the gum epithelium from filling the empty space first and secures room for bone and ligament to grow.

It is performed when teeth become loose from melted jawbone, or when there is insufficient bone volume for an implant after extraction; precise diagnosis determines whether and how to apply it.

When gum regeneration is needed

  1. 1 When jawbone melts from periodontitis and teeth become loose
  2. 2 When gums recede and tooth roots are exposed
  3. 3 When there is insufficient jawbone for an implant after extraction
  4. 4 When you want to preserve natural teeth as much as possible

Emdogain

What is Emdogain?

Emdogain is a periodontal regeneration material that uses enamel matrix derivative (EMD) to reproduce the natural healing process of a tooth’s initial formation, inducing regeneration of the periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone.

Applied to the surface of damaged periodontal tissue, it promotes tissue regeneration, helps recovery where the jawbone has melted away, and increases tooth stability. Applied together with a minimally invasive technique, it can reduce the recovery burden.

Advantages of Emdogain

  1. 1 Biocompatible regeneration mimicking the natural healing process
  2. 2 Induces recovery of periodontal tissue such as the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone
  3. 3 Improves the chance of preserving loose natural teeth
  4. 4 Fast recovery when applied with minimal incision

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Periodontal Regeneration

Is periodontal regeneration very painful?

It is done under local anesthesia so pain during the procedure is minimal, and post-procedure discomfort is managed with medication and care.

Can loose teeth be saved?

It varies with the degree of jawbone loss, but timely periodontal regeneration treatment can increase the chance of preserving natural teeth.

How is Emdogain different from ordinary gum treatment?

While ordinary gum treatment focuses on removing and managing inflammation, Emdogain induces regeneration of damaged periodontal tissue with enamel matrix protein.

How long is recovery?

It varies with the treatment scope, but usually daily life is possible within 1–2 weeks, and the regeneration progress is checked at regular check-ups.
